Bonnie Schneider
Following my graduation from the Bachelor of Music program (Boston University, 1963) However, following that I was witnessing the liberal arts as a teacher (Brown University 1971-75) I'm a believer in education that integrates study of the arts and studies of other subjects. This is not a surprise since an ethnomusicologist with a PhD as well as an MA from UCLA has a keen interest in the arts. This isn't a surprise since the department for ethnomusicology of UC Berkeley, where I was a professor between 1975 and 1976, is located in the college of letters and Sciences' Department of Music. The ability to pursue multiple areas of interest is something that I truly enjoy. Both undergraduates and graduate students (for who I've written three textbooks: Music in India, The Classical Traditions of India, Thinking Musically: Music in Japan - Experimenting Music and expressing Cultural Expression) are enthused by my teaching. There are times when I pursue primarily professorial activities in addition to periods of administrative responsibilities to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98, Chair of the Deans in the College of Letters and Science 1994-98, Chair of the Group on Asian Studies Since 1999, and Chair of the Department of Music again).
